Let’s Talk Seeds
Winter might seem quiet, but for us it’s peak seed season. The garden starts long before the soil warms with nothing more than a few notes, lists, and a plan.
Planting a Garden From Seed:
A good garden starts with good soil. Loose, well draining soil gives seeds room to grow roots. Plant seeds at the depth listed on the packet (planting too deep is one of the most common mistakes). Water gently and keep soil consistently moist. Damp not muddy. Most seeds need plenty of sun, about 6–8 hours a day to grow strong. Pay attention to spacing. Crowded plants compete and don’t perform as well. Then be patient. Some seeds pop up fast, others take time.
A Realistic Gardening Tip:
You don’t have to grow everything. Choose a few plants you love to eat or enjoy seeing each day. A small garden that gets steady care will almost always thrive more than a big one that becomes too much to manage. We’re picking our seeds now and getting ready for spring, and if you’re dreaming up your own garden, stop in or call us. We love talking seeds just as much as we love plants.
Common Seed Myths
“Seeds need lots of water”
Seeds need consistent moisture, not soggy soil. Too much water can cause rot before they even sprout.
“If it didn’t sprout the seed was bad”
Not always. Temperature, planting depth, and moisture all play a role.
“I have to start seeds indoors to be a real gardener”
Nope! Many plants prefer being directly sown right into the garden.
