The weather in Texas can be brutal. From intense heat and dry conditions in the summer to unpredictable ice storms in the winter, it's hard on both people and plants. At Tex-Scapes Nursery and Landscape, we're well aware of how tough it can be to grow beautiful plants and to keep them healthy and happy. That's one of the reasons we recommend succulents to our DIY gardening and landscape customers. While they look delicate and petite, they're actually quite hardy and can withstand hot, dry weather, cold snaps, and everything in between. That is, if they're well cared for and provided with the right nutrients. Native succulent varieties do best, and that's why we stock our garden center with as many as we can.
What Makes Succulents So Great?
Succulents are perfect for Ennis, Texas gardens because they're highly drought-tolerant, which is why they're often included in Xeriscape gardens. Succulents are also fantastic as indoor plants because of their small stature and minimal needs. Perhaps most importantly, there are literally 100s of varieties to choose from and they come in all kinds of colors and textures so there's something for everyone.
Environmental Impact of Succulents
It's certainly true that succulents are attractive plants that people enjoy, but they're also an eco-friendly option. Xeriscaping has become a popular form of gardening due to its low water usage and the fact that it doesn't require a great deal of disruption to the environment. Xeriscape gardeners rarely have to use pesticides or other chemicals that can harm wildlife, humans, and taint the water supply. In other words, it's a more natural way to garden.
Succulents for Outdoor Gardens
One of the most popular gardening techniques in Ennis is Xeriscaping, which uses plants that are drought tolerant and that require very little water. Whether your entire garden is Xeriscape, or just a section of it, succulents are a wonderful way to add a little something special. They're extremely easy to grow, and there are varieties that thrive in full sun, partial sun, and shade so they can be placed just about anywhere.
Popular Ennis, Texas Succulent Varieties
When you shop our Ennis, TX garden store, you'll find a variety of succulents that will make themselves right at home in your garden. Here are just a few species that you might consider:
Aeoniums
There are around 35 different species of Aeoniums and they range from short and stubby to long and branched. They come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. One of the common traits among all Aeoniums is the fact that they produce rosettes of leaves that produce star-like flower from the center.
Sedum
There are more than 600 species of annuals, perennials, creeping herbs, and shrubs included in this group of succulents. With a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes, there's a Sedum for everyone. They grow well even in direct sunlight and poor soil. They're an ideal choice for Xeriscape gardens and they're great ground covers.
Sempervivum
Also commonly called "Hen and Chicks", these are some of the most popular succulents around. They're perennials that produce colorful, compact rosettes that spread quickly to form a lovely ground cover. They're incredibly easy to grow, can tolerate both heat and cold and don't mind shade or bright light either.
Senecio Serpens
Also known as Blue Chalksticks, this low growing, small succulent makes a beautiful ground cover for warm, sunny spots. This lovely little plant will provide year-round interest and color to any landscape. When the weather gets hot and the sun beats down, the powdery blue-green leaves take on a pretty purple hue.
Outdoor Succulent Planting and Care
Most succulents require very little additional water, which makes them a perfect plant for Xeriscape gardens and rocky areas. Some varieties thrive on direct sunlight, but others prefer to stay in a shady area. While they can be planted directly into the soil, many gardeners prefer to use containers that are well-drained. Succulents are often able to grow in poor soil, however, they all need proper nutrients so feeding them with an organic fertilizer is recommended.
Succulents For Indoors
You already know that succulents make great garden plants and that they're ideal for the hot, dry Texas climate, but did you know that they're also wonderful houseplants? Whether you keep them inside year-round, or you bring them in for the cooler winter months, succulents are a great way to add color and texture to your home's interior. Just about any pretty container will make a lovely home for your indoor succulents, from a terra cotta pot to a terrarium.
Indoor Succulent Varieties
While there are some strains of succulent that won't grow well outdoors in Texas, you can grow any variety of succulent inside your home. Mix and match varieties, shapes, and sizes on a windowsill, table, or shelf to create a colorful display. You can even bring your outdoor plants inside if you wish, just make sure to get rid of any pesky bugs before you do.
Caring For Indoor Succulents
Succulents, like all plants, need adequate sunlight and food to grow and thrive. Don't place them directly in front of a window that gets full sun, however, or you'll risk burning the leaves. The interior of your home is usually going to be cooler and more humid than it is outside, so you won't have to worry about watering very often. In fact, you don't have to do much with your indoor succulents besides enjoy their uniqueness and beauty.
